| Who: |
The
Friends of the West Valley
Recreation Corridor (WVRC) is a non-profit
organization comprised of nearly 1,000 stakeholders,
including volunteers, public and private sector representatives
and community leaders. These stakeholders are
dedicated to creating an enhanced corridor along the
Agua Fria and New Rivers within Maricopa County. The
group was initiated in 2001 through a partnership of
WESTMARC and Valley Forward Association.
|
| Why: |
Through
the collaboration of eight West Valley cities, the WVRC
project has the potential to become the
landmark amenity for residents and tourists. The
WVRC is an idea conceived in 1998 by John F. Long and
other West Valley leaders when they met to explore the
potential of creating a recreation corridor along the
Agua Fria River. The Flood Control District led the
planning and feasibility studies along the Agua Fria
while the Maricopa Association of Governments simultaneously
studied the New River for multi-modal transportation
purposes. The October 28th Walk the Vision event will
bring hundreds of people out to explore the riverbed,
but more importantly it solidifies the second step in
bringing a true recreation corridor to the West Valley.
The first trail segment opened along the Agua Fria River
last October in Avondale.
