| Exciting things are happening in the West Valley! |
|
| In 1998,
John F. Long and other West Valley community leaders
conceived the idea of transforming 32 miles of the
Agua Fria river into a multi-use recreational area
of parks, ballfields, playgrounds, equestrian and
hiking trails. The transformed area would also again
support riparian and wetland wildlife habitats. |
 |
|

Creation of the corridor will open up 1,600 adjacent acres for other uses |
The
Agua Fria Watercourse Master Plan, developed by
the Flood Control District of Maricopa County,
identifies potential uses of the river that are
compatible with its primary functin of floodwater
conveyance opening up new uses for the land that
would be raised out of the existing floodplain
for both recreation and development. The
Friends
of the West Valley Recreation Corridor (WVRC)
is dedicated to serving as a catalyst for bringing
this landmark amenity to reality!
|
The Friends
of the WVRC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization
comprised of nearly 1,000 people, including volunteers,
public and private sector representatives and
community leaders who are dedicated to realizing
this dream. Created in 2001 through a partnership
of WESTMARC and Valley Forward Association, the
organization provides advocacy, promotion and
education forcused on the development of the Agua
Fria and the New River by creating 50+ miles of
a multi-use corridor connecting residential areas,
parks, schools, recreation and commerce within
and around the project site.
|
|
 |
WVRC
Friends provide input on project plans, help facilitate
public events, identify and secure funding sources,
and help promote the project in the community. Friends
are the catalyst for making this landmark amenity a
reality.
